ESL One Cologne 2020 Will Be Held Online: The Announcement

ESL has officially announced that ESL one cologne 2020 would be held online. in their official tweet, they said that they tried and deeply researched all the details regarding the transportation and safety of players but were unfortunate and finally decided that the tournament shall be held in an online format.

“The decision was made after extensive research and understanding of global travel regulations and individual national guidelines due to ongoing COVID-19 measures.”, said ESL.

ESL stated that the tournament would begin from August 18th and end on August 30th and is being split up in four regions: Europe, Asia, North America and Oceanic.

According to the ESL tweet, the teams are selected by the original ESL One Cologne qualification procedure i.e, The ESL Pro Tour ranking, ESL Pro Challenger tournament and the ESL World Ranking.

The prize pool of the tournament would be $500,000 while another $500,000 is kept for Intel Extreme Masters Katowice and  ESL One Cologne in 2021, which would be held in 2021 and would most likely be held offline.

Prize pool distribution and format

  • Europe $325,000
    • Initially, there would be 16 teams with two groups of 8. Double Elimination best-of-three series. Top 4 of each group advancing to Playoffs. Playoffs consist of 8 teams in Single Elimination best-of-three series. The Grand Final will be played as a best-of-five.
  • North America $135,000
    • Initially, there would be 16 teams with two groups of 8. Double Elimination best-of-three series. Top 4 of each group advancing to Playoffs. Playoffs consist of 8 teams in Single Elimination best-of-three series. The Grand Final will be played as a best-of-five.
  • Asia $20,000
    • There would be a total of 4 teams. Double Elimination best-of-three series. The Grand Final will be played as a best-of-five with the Upper Bracket Winners holding a 1 map advantage (1:0).
  • Oceania $20,000
    • There would be a total of 4 teams. Double Elimination best-of-three series. The Grand Final will be played as a best-of-five with the Upper Bracket Winners holding a 1 map advantage (1:0).
