Naughty Dog has revealed that The Last of Us Part 2 takes place five years after the original left off, with a 19-year-old Ellie acting as the game’s protagonist. Joel also makes a return, watching over Ellie as a slowly aging old man. The first trailer revealed the return of Ellie and Joel. The second trailer was released on October 30, 2017 as part of Paris Games Week. It revealed four new characters: Yara, Lev, Emily, and an unnamed character played by Laura Bailey. The game was featured at Sony's E3 event on June 11, 2018.

The cutscene featured in the trailer in which Ellie kisses another woman, Dina, was noted for its accomplishment in making a kiss. It is difficult to animate. In January 2017, PlayStation Blog awarded The Last of Us Part II in the category of Most Anticipated Game of the Year. Later that year, it won Most Wanted Game at The Golden Joystick Awards at The Game Awards. On July 2, 2018, it was awarded in the category of Special Commendation for Graphics and Sound at the Game Critics Awards.

The new trailer showed a stealthy gameplay and had a cinematic look. With so many actions, killing, and brutally murdering the trailer was something not for faint heart. Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, defended the trailer, stating that the game is "made by adults to be played by adults".  According to him, this is the most ambitious game yet.
This game will have the best story, art, and gameplay. With beautiful graphics and intense story, the game will sure connect us emotionally.
